Dark brown and black hairs are very easy to remove with light and laser equipment. However, because blonde, grey and red hairs contain less or hardly any pigment, it is difficult for the laser to recognize them, therefore they cannot be treated with laser therapy. A different, depilation method is required for this type of hair removal. At the Skin & Laser clinic Delft, we offer electrical epilation as an alternative to laser treatment.
Electrical epilation is suitable for:
• Blond hair
• Grey hairs
• Red hair
• Thin light / dark hairs
Types of excess hair, which can be treated
Unwanted hair growth can occur in everyone, the most common forms are too much hair (hypertrichosis) and excess hair growth in a woman (hirsutism). Having extra hair growth can develop or worsen due to medication, weight loss, hereditary conditions or a hormone imbalance.
During a free intake appointment, which lasts around 30 minutes, we take a close look at your skin and discuss your wishes and the possibilities for treatment. We will discuss, among other things, what treatments you may have had before, how you care for your skin and which products and/or medicines you use. On this basis, we can share specific tips and advice and make a tailor-made plan.
Prior to the treatment we clean your skin. The hairs should be about 2 mm or longer on the day of treatment. The skin therapist will insert a sterile needle, as thin as the hair itself, through the hair into the skin. You hardly feel anything because this is a natural skin opening. Once in the hair follicle the needle tip is warmed up. The blood vessels and the cells that cause the growth of the hair are destroyed by the heat. As soon as the hair is released, we remove it with a tweezer.
The heat during the treatment can sometimes feel slightly sensitive. The amperage can be adjusted per person, so that it can be tolerated for everyone. After the treatment, the skin is slightly swollen and you can sometimes feel small bumps around the hair follicles. The redness and swelling disappear within a few hours. After each treatment fewer and fewer hairs return.
Number of treatments
With electric epilation every hair is treated separately. This technique therefore works a lot slower than laser therapy. The number of treatments varies greatly and depends on the size of the area you want to be depilated. For electrical epilation of, for example, your upper lip and chin, 8 to 15 sessions may be required with a duration of 30 minutes. Approximately 70-80% of the hair follicles are then destroyed. The remaining hairs are hardly disturbing and often very thin in structure.
In order to ensure a permanent result, we advise to continue carrying out 1-2 separate treatments a year. Unfortunately, a 100% hair-free state can’t be reached by any device, but it is already wonderful barely having to think about it.
The treatments are performed every 4 to 6 weeks. When this sequence is maintained, it guarantees the best result. Many hairs are in a phase of growth during the treatment. In this phase, a hair can be effectively eliminated. If not all hairs can be depilated in 1 treatment, the treatment frequency will go up.
Guidelines in advance of treatment
- The hairs should not be depilated, waxed or pulled out until 4 weeks before the start of the first treatment and during the entire treatment process.
- All hairs in the area to be treated must have a minimum length of 2 mm.
- Sunscreen with SPF30 / 50 should be applied regularly during the treatment process.
- You cannot have cold sores if your face will be treated. In that case a new appointment will be made.
Guidelines after treatment
- After treatment you can take up your daily activities immediately.
- After treatment you can use your own cosmetics and lotions.
- The hairs will grow back just before the next treatment.
- The hairs must be at least 2 mm during the next treatment.
- Please contact us if after 3 days your skin remains extremely swollen, red, itching or feels burning.
Why trat every 4 weeks?
The treatments are performed every 4 weeks. When we keep this rhythm, this gives the best result. Many hairs are then in the growth phase during the treatment. This is the phase in which a hair can be effectively eliminated.
When there is a medical indication, e.g. women with excessive facial hair, you can apply for a (partial) refund from your health insurance, the extent to which you can look up in policy conditions of your additional health insurance. For other medical indications, we can take care of the appliance at your health insurance. For some insurance companies a referral from your GP or dermatologist is required.

Meest gestelde vragen
Waarom iedere 4 weken behandelen?
