A tattoo that was once a beautiful piece of art or a poignant statement can feel meaningless or misplaced years later. About 85% of people who have a tattoo, regret it later in life. Fortunately, there is a simple technique for removing or blurring tattoos. Permanent make-up can also be used to treat unwanted tattoos.
At Huid & Laserkliniek Delft, we specialize in the removal of tattoos. We work with the latest laser techniques with which the ink can be removed without scarring.
Laser treatment works well with:
- Dark blue ink
- Black ink
- Permanent make-up ink (such as incorrectly set eyebrow lines)
- Pigment spots
During the free, no obligation 30-minute initial consultation, we will take a look at your skin and discuss your wishes and the possibilities. We will discuss, among other things, what kind of treatments you have had in the past, how you take care of your skin and what kind of products and/or medicine you use. Based on this, we will provide you with tips and advice and make a customized plan.
Prior to the treatment we will check whether your skin is suitable by checking for signs of tanning. During the treatment, you will be provided with special glasses which will protect your eyes from the light of the laser. We apply a thin layer of gel to the area, which cools the skin and guides the laser light. The laser emits a bright flash of light, which feels like a rubber band flicking quickly against the skin. Most people can tolerate these short injections well. The light is converted into heat in the skin and the skin temporarily turns white in the treated spot. Immediately after the treatment, the skin is cooled with an ice pack, which offers pleasant relief. A special ointment is applied to the treated area and it is covered with a bandage.
The laser emits ultra-short pulses with high energy to the skin. In this way, the laser breaks down the tattoo carefully. The ink particles will then naturally leave the body via the lymph vessel system. Within 30 minutes the white discolouration of the skin disappears and the tattoo looks like it did before the treatment. The treatment itself can cause some discomfort.
After the treatment, your body starts healing the wound and breaking down the ink. This process can take up to 8 weeks. Your skin can remain swollen from a few hours up to a few days, it can appear red and feel sensitive and itchy, you could also experience some skin peeling. The healing process takes about 10-20 days. If blisters start to develop, it is important to keep your skin clean and contact us.
Severe side effects are rare. Some side effects include redness and irritated skin for up to a week after treatment. The wound can sometimes remain wet and become inflamed. When the treatment takes place on a sun-tanned skin, there is a chance that the laser will break down your own skin pigment. This can cause pigment change in your skin, which will correct itself after 1 to 2 years. Because we work with heat, there is always a chance of blistering, which unfortunately ultimately results in a scar. Dark skin types cannot be treated because this skin contains too much pigment.
Number of treatments
On average 5-15 treatments are needed to remove a tattoo. The number of treatments and the final result may differ per person, it depends on the depth, colour, location, type of ink and type of tattoo. We can therefore not give a 100% guarantee that the ink will disappear completely.
Professional tattoos need relatively more treatments to fade than non-professional tattoos. The ink is often deeper and consists of several layers. If the tattoo is palpable when you go over it with your finger, then you know that the ink is very deep and scar formation may have occurred already.
The treatment can be carried out with a minimum of 7 to 8 weeks between treatments. This time between treatments is necessary as the ink needs to be cleared from the body. After the first treatment, you will see fast results; As the treatments progress, the tattoo gradually fades away.
Guidelines in advance of treatment
- Treatment can not be performed on a sun-tanned skin.
- Sunscreen with SPF30/50 should be applied regularly from 4 weeks before the treatment till 4 weeks after treatment.
- We cannot treat you on the face if you are suffering from a cold sore, this can cause unsightly side effects. In this case a new appointment will be scheduled.
Guidelines after treatment
- Treat the skin with Flamigel / wound gel for 5 days prior to treatment (available at the clinic)
- Leave the band aid for 24 hours and keep it dry.
- Keep the skin clean and sterile if blisters appear and contact us immediately.
- If blisters or scabs develop, do not scratch or pick the area; this can cause scarring.
- Do not swim, exercise intensively or go to the sauna until the skin is healed.
- Avoid the sun on the treated area if possible. If you do go in the sun, cover the treated area, Lubricating SPF alone is not enough.
- Contact us if your skin still feels extremely swollen, red, itchy or is burning after 2 days.

Meest gestelde vragen
